1.    Background

The Association for Microfinance Institutions Kenya (AMFI-K) is a member-based umbrella network for microfinance businesses and microfinance service providers established and registered under the Societies Act since 1999. Since its inception, AMFI-K has been a key driver of Kenya’s microfinance industry, with a mission to create a conducive environment for the development of microfinance institutions (MFIs), their clients, and the overall business ecosystem. AMFI-K has over 80 members, ranging from large, mature MFIs to relatively smaller, rural MFIs, wholesalers and retailers, micro-insurance providers, and developmental institutions, serving over 10 million clients, both individuals and MSMEs. Access to financial services at the bottom of the pyramid is critical in enabling the poor and low-income households to access essential basic needs such as education, healthcare services, decent housing, clean water, and energy, thus promoting human dignity, equity, and security.

AMFI-K Water Credit Adoption Program (WCAD) Summary

Over the years, microfinance has proved to be a resilient tool in poverty alleviation and thus has been recognized as a key tool not only for improving the community’s standards of living but also for national economic development. Water and sanitation are one of the necessities of life. Safe water and adequate sanitation are critical for families, for it decreases illness, improve health, and lessens the burden on women and children. Sufficient water increases crop production and animal husbandry and thus improving household quality of living.

In our endeavor to strengthen the capacity of our MFIs to deliver appropriate and sustainable products and services to the communities we serve, AMFI- K in partnership with Water.org, has been piloting a Water Credit and Sanitation Program for microfinance institutions in Kenya since 2019. The objective of this program is to build the capacity of financial institutions to be able to provide financial solutions that meet clients’ needs and bridge the barriers to safe water and sanitation. Water.org has provided budgetary support to AMFI-K that is deployed towards providing WSS technical support to participating FI’s who, in turn were projected to disburse WSS loans.
