1. About AMFI-K

The Association of Microfinance Institutions – Kenya (AMFI-K) is the national umbrella body representing microfinance institutions and other stakeholders committed to advancing financial inclusion in Kenya. For more than two decades, AMFI-K has championed initiatives that expand access to responsible financial services, strengthen institutions, promote innovation, influence policy, and improve the livelihoods of millions of Kenyans.

As the financial inclusion landscape continues to evolve, there is a growing need to recognize and communicate the institutions, innovations and individuals driving positive change, expanding opportunities and creating sustainable impact within communities. AMFI-K therefore seeks to strengthen its institutional visibility, stakeholder engagement and industry voice through strategic, timely and impactful communications.

AMFI-K works across policy advocacy, capacity building, networking and linkages, research and knowledge management, and related initiatives that support a stronger and more inclusive financial services ecosystem in Kenya.

2. Purpose of the Position

The Communications Officer will support and strengthen AMFI-K’s internal and external communications, brand positioning and stakeholder engagement. The role will develop and disseminate high-quality written, visual and digital content; manage media and digital platforms; support events and campaigns; promote AMFIK’s programmes, partnerships, research and policy work; and position AMFI-K as a credible and influential voice on microfinance and financial inclusion.

3. Key Responsibilities

3.1 Strategic Communications

  • Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer and management to develop and implement AMFI-K’s communications strategy and annual communications plan.
  • Develop audience-focused messaging for members, partners, regulators, policymakers, media, development partners, investors and the public.
  • Ensure consistency, accuracy and professionalism across AMFI-K’s internal and external communications.
  • Support management in communicating organisational priorities, achievements, milestones and emerging issues.

3.2 Digital Communications & Social Media

  • Manage AMFI-K’s digital communication channels and social media platforms, including content planning, scheduling, publishing and audience engagement.
  • Develop and maintain a monthly and campaign-based content calendar aligned to AMFI-K’s strategic priorities.
  • Create and coordinate multimedia content, including graphics, infographics, short videos, reels, interviews, photography and other digital assets.
  • Monitor digital performance, analyse engagement and reach, and provide regular recommendations for improving online visibility and impact.
  • Identify emerging digital trends and opportunities relevant to AMFI-K’s audiences and sector.

3.3 Media & Public Relations

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with journalists, editors, media houses and industry publications.
  • Respond to media inquiries and coordinate interviews, press briefings and other media engagements.
  • Draft press releases, media advisories, talking points, Q&As, opinion pieces and other media materials.
  • Maintain and regularly update AMFI-K’s media and stakeholder database.
  • Monitor media coverage and emerging narratives affecting AMFI-K and the financial inclusion sector.
  • Support issues and crisis communications, including timely escalation of reputational or sensitive matters to management.

3.4 Content Development, Publications & Storytelling

  • Write, edit and proofread high-quality content for AMFI-K’s website, newsletters, reports, publications, speeches, presentations, brochures, campaigns and other communication products.
  • Translate technical research, policy, programme and sector information into clear, accessible and compelling messages for different audiences.
  • Develop human-interest stories, case studies, member profiles, testimonials and impact stories that demonstrate the value and impact of AMFI-K and its members.
  • Support production and dissemination of AMFI-K’s sector reports, knowledge products and other publications.

3.5 Thought Leadership & Industry Positioning

  • Support positioning of AMFI-K as a credible industry voice on microfinance, financial inclusion and related policy and development issues.
  • Develop or coordinate blogs, articles, opinion pieces, executive messages, speeches and thoughtleadership materials.
  • Identify opportunities for the CEO, Board and technical experts to participate in media interviews, panels, conferences and industry discussions.
  • Proactively identify stories, milestones and sector developments that can strengthen AMFI-K’s profile and influence.

3.6 Internal & Member Communications

  • Coordinate timely and effective communications to AMFI-K members, staff, Board and other internal stakeholders.
  • Develop newsletters, circulars, announcements, member updates and other internal communication materials.
  • Support departments to package and communicate programme activities, achievements and opportunities in a clear and consistent manner.

3.7 Events, Campaigns & Visibility

  • Develop communications and visibility plans for AMFI-K conferences, forums, trainings, launches, awards and stakeholder engagements.
  • Coordinate pre-event, live-event and post-event communications, including invitations, media engagement, social media campaigns and event content.
  • Coordinate photography, videography, branding and other communications requirements for major events.
  • Develop post-event communication materials, highlights and impact stories.

3.8 Brand Management

  • Safeguard and strengthen AMFI-K’s corporate identity and brand reputation.
  • Ensure consistent application of AMFI-K branding across publications, presentations, digital platforms, events and external communication materials.
  • Maintain an organised library of approved photographs, videos, logos, templates, publications and other communication assets.
  • Review communications materials produced internally or by partners, where required, for consistency with AMFI-K’s brand and messaging.

3.9 Communications Monitoring & Analytics

  • Track media coverage, digital performance, audience growth, engagement and other relevant communications metrics.
  • Prepare regular communications performance reports and recommend actions to improve reach, engagement and visibility.
  • Maintain records of media coverage, publications, campaigns, events and other communications outputs.

4. Key Deliverables / Performance Indicators

Brand management Consistent application of approved AMFI-K branding and messaging.

5. Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Digital Media or a related field.
  • At least 3–5 years of progressive relevant experience in communications, public relations, journalism, digital communications, media or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing organisational social media platforms and digital campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality written, visual and multimedia content.
  • Experience in media engagement, event communications and stakeholder communications.
  • Strong portfolio of previous communications work is required and may be requested during shortlisting/interviews.
  • Experience in financial services, microfinance, financial inclusion, development, policy advocacy or a membership-based organisation will be an added advantage.

6. Technical Skills

  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and storytelling skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and content management systems.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms and digital publishing tools.
  • Proficiency in graphic design and publishing tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud (including Photoshop/InDesign) or equivalent.
  • Basic to intermediate photography and video production/editing skills.
  • Ability to use social media and digital analytics tools to monitor performance and generate insights.
  • Ability to develop presentations, infographics and other visually engaging communication products.
