AMFI-Kenya Shares Kenya’s Microfinance Sector Experience at AFRACA’s TCDC 2026 Exchange Programme

The Association of Microfinance Institutions – Kenya (AMFI-K) participated in the 2026 Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC) Multi-Country Exchange Programme – Kenya Country Visit, organised by the African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA) from 2–6 November 2026 in Nairobi.

The programme brings together regulators, policymakers and financial sector practitioners from nine African countries to facilitate peer learning and knowledge exchange on digitalisation, financial sector supervision and inclusive finance through Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs) and Microfinance Institutions (MFIs).

AMFI-Kenya’s contribution

AMFI-Kenya featured in Session 5, titled The Microfinance Sector in Kenya: Landscape, Advocacy and Digital Transformation.

The session provided a platform to share perspectives on Kenya’s microfinance industry, the role of industry coordination and advocacy, and the opportunities and challenges associated with digital transformation among MFIs.

The engagement brought together representatives of regional central banks and regulatory authorities, including institutions from Senegal, Sudan, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone.

Kenyan financial sector participants included Caritas Microfinance Bank Limited, Sacco Central Kenya and the Credit Information Sharing Association of Kenya (CIS Kenya), alongside AMFI-Kenya and AFRACA, among other stakeholders.

Strengthening industry coordination and collaboration

The discussions highlighted the importance of effective industry coordination in addressing common sector challenges and promoting a supportive environment for microfinance development.

Industry associations play an important complementary role to regulatory authorities through collective advocacy, capacity building, research, networking, information sharing and the promotion of responsible financial practices.

The engagement also provided an opportunity for participants to exchange experiences and perspectives on the evolving role of digital technology in strengthening institutional operations and expanding access to financial services.

Advancing regional knowledge exchange

AFRACA’s TCDC Exchange Programme provides an important platform for African institutions to share practical experiences, learn from counterpart organisations and identify approaches that can be adapted to their respective national contexts.

AMFI-Kenya’s participation reflects its continued commitment to industry representation, institutional development, strategic partnerships and the advancement of an innovative and inclusive microfinance sector.
