Honored for Pioneering Support of the WaterCredit Initiative

The Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kenya (AMFI-K) is proud to announce that it has been honored with a distinguished recognition award by Water.org, in acknowledgment of the association’s outstanding leadership and continuous support for microfinance institutions in developing and scaling the WaterCredit model.

The award highlights AMFI-K’s pivotal role as a national umbrella network in bridging international development frameworks with local financial institutions. By equipping Microfinance Banks (MFBs) and Credit-Only Microfinance Institutions (COMFIs) with the necessary technical capacity and strategic guidance, AMFI-K has enabled member organizations to integrate Water and Sanitation (WASH) financing into their core product offerings.

Driving Impact Through Market-Driven Solutions

The WaterCredit initiative has revolutionized how low-income households access essential infrastructure. By providing small, affordable loans tailored for water connections, rainwater harvesting tanks, and sanitary facilities, microfinance institutions have empowered thousands of families to bypass traditional financing hurdles.

Grounded in findings from AMFI-K’s 2026 Microfinance Sector Report, specialized sustainable lending portfolios—including WASH and green energy finance; continue to record exceptional repayment discipline and low portfolio-at-risk metrics, proving that social impact and commercial viability go hand in hand.

A Shared Vision for Sustainable Inclusion

Commenting on the milestone, AMFI Kenya leadership expressed profound gratitude to www.water.org  for the enduring partnership. This recognition reinforces AMFI-K’s broader strategic vision for 2026: expanding institutional capacity, championing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, and fostering an inclusive financial sector that leaves no community behind.
